BLACKWELL’S OXFORD Group 2012 Presents: Writing a Historical Novel- The Links Between Fact and Fiction
Wednesday, July 29th at 19:00 – 21:00
Group 2012 is delighted to be welcoming author Pat Barr to Blackwell’s for an insightful discussion on writing a historical novel focusing on the links between fact and fiction. Pat Barr has written an array of fiction and non-fiction titles including The Memsahibs and A Curious Life for a Lady.

Group 2012 is an exciting writing group in Oxford who meet monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month at Blackwell’s and the Friends Meeting House. The group started in 2012 as a collaboration between Blackwell’s Bookshop, The Oxford Editors and Hersilia Press. Sessions include talks by authors, agents, publisher and booksellers; discussions on all aspects of writing and publishing; writing and marketing workshops and writing critique sessions.   1. I thought members might like a look at what we are planning for the year ahead. Things may change and speakers may not be able to do the dates, but this is what we are aiming for: We have still to confirm with speakers so things might change.

    Rebecca Wait
    Our guest is Rebecca Wait, author of the novels The Followers and The View on the Way Down. She’ll be talking us through her experiences as a novelist, the creative process, how to (try to) make a living from being a writer, the author’s relationship with their editor and agent, and other aspects of being a published writer.

    This will be a feedback session so please bring something to share if you wish, or just come and offer your feedback. We will try and have two authors there so we can divide into groups to ensure everyone has a nice long time to read and talk.

    Philip Davies’s book launch: Destiny’s Rebel
    Philip Davies has been a Group 2012 member since its inception. You’re invited to join him on the afternoon of Saturday 12th September for the launch of his Young Adult novel, ‘Destiny’s Rebel’. There will also be cake!

    Books We Love, Why We Love Them and How We Sell Them
    Our panel for the evening consists of some of Blackwell’s finest booksellers. They will talk about the books they love, what qualities they look for in books and they’ll also demystify how books are selected for promotion and turned into bestsellers

    Our Christmas gathering where we toast the year and read to one another from our own works and from a selection of authors we love.

    Experiences from the Group; and Self-Publishing
    It’s a two-parter this time around. For the first half, we’ll hear from members of the group who have had books published – they’ll tell us about their experiences so far, what they’ve learnt and what the potential pitfalls are. The second part will be all about Self-Publishing.

    Getting used to talking about you and your novel
    Once you book’s been published, how do you talk about it? (and sell it!) Join us as we interview a published author for the Blackwell’s YouTube channel and then . . . it’s your turn! We’ll discuss and mentor you so that you can hone your skills in telling the world why your book is the next must-read.

    The Publishers’ View
    Two publishers (to be confirmed) will each give their perspective on the book world from the point of view of the high-quality independent publisher. They’ll explain what success means to them, what they are looking for when they decide what to publish and they’ll identify the current trends in publishing.

    Creative Writing Workshop
    Two guest authors will lead this Creative Writing workshop. Further details to follow.

    Group 2012 is a writing group based in Oxford which meets monthly, on the last Wednesday of each month. Meetings include talks by authors, agents, publishers and booksellers, discussions on all aspects of writing and publishing, writing workshops and writing critique sessions.

    There is a membership charge of £20 per year to cover our costs. Membership allows you to come to all meetings. Alternatively, you can attend individual meetings at a cost of £3 each time.

    Writing Competitions and Courses – which are the best writing competitions to enter and why? Which writing courses are recommended and good value for money? Find out in this informative session.

    Ann Cleeves – Ann is an award-winning crime writer whose books have been translated into twenty languages. She’s the creator of DCI Vera Stanhope and also writes an acclaimed series of novels set in Shetland.

    Salt Publishing is an award-winning publisher of fiction and short stories with stellar authors, offering gorgeous books, serious literature and life-enhancing stories.

    Re next January’s proposed evening on publishing and self-publishing, I shall be putting out my third self-published book next month, so if I can be of any use to you on that evening in January as a source of information about how self-publication works and doesn’t work I am happy to share what I know.

      1. Hi Cherry, since July the world has turned – and by 27 January I shall have moved to the south coast, or be stuffing things inside a van in order to go – so I’m sorry to say that I shall no longer be able to take part in the workshop on self-publishing.
